Columnar-to-Equiaxed Transition in SOLidification Processing – CETSOL #6
The general objective of the project is to improve our understanding of the physical phenomena that govern the formation of the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) in alloy solidification and its consequences for casting soundness. For that purpose, both experimental investigations of the formation of dendritic solidification and numerical models are being developed. Several companies endorse the project since the first proposal was written in 1999.
Within this CETSOL-6 project the tasks given in the former phases of CETSOL MAP shall be continued and significantly extended. Therefore microgravity experiments will be performed and analysed in detail. Another central task of this project phase will be the modelling of the columnar-to-equiaxed transition – especially in 3D – using different types of numerical models. Here, the microgravity experiments provide a unique data basis on diffusive solidification conditions to verify and improve modelling.
