MCWASP – 17th International Conference on Modelling of Casting, Welding & Advanced Solidification Processes

Strengthening Connections in the Global Casting Simulation Community

The 17th International Conference on Modeling of Casting, Welding and Advanced Solidification Processes (MCWASP XVII) in Winchester, UK, provided an outstanding platform for scientific exchange and collaboration. Together with around 130 colleagues from 22 countries, we discussed the latest developments in solidification science, casting technologies, and simulation-driven process optimization.

Access contributed two presentations: Dr. Janin Eiken presented “Solidification of Aluminum Wrought Alloys with Elevated Hydrogen Content”, providing new insights into hydrogen-related solidification phenomena. Dr. Jürgen Jakumeit shared results from “Multi-Modal Investigation of Porosity in Aerospace Investment Casting: from Micrographs and CT-Imaging via Simulation to AI Models”, highlighting how experimental characterization, simulation, and AI can be combined to better understand and predict casting defects.

Through their contributions and the intensive scientific exchange throughout the conference, Dr. Eiken and Dr. Jakumeit provided valuable insights into application-oriented casting process simulation and advanced porosity prediction approaches. They also showcased recent advances in phase-field modeling, including state-of-the-art simulations performed with MICRESS, demonstrating the growing capabilities of microstructure prediction and virtual materials development.

Beyond the technical sessions, the lively exchange with industrial partners and colleagues from GKN, Safran, MAGMA, ProCAST, and many other organizations made the event especially valuable. These discussions continue to strengthen the connection between research and industrial application ana are essential drivers for innovation in casting technology.

A sincere thank you to the organizers and all participants for an inspiring week of knowledge sharing, collaboration, and new perspectives. We look forward to continuing these conversations and advancing casting simulation together.
